Toilet Training
Alvin Eden, M.D.

Toilet training is a normal process that should not cause you or your baby any trouble. But sad to say, it often does. By following some simple guidelines, you can help your child train smoothly and peacefully. The right attitude on your part is essential. You must be friendly and encouraging but also persistent and consistent. Don't be too serious or rigid about it. On the other hand, don't be too permissive either. The right time to begin varies from baby to baby. At around twelve to eighteen months of age, some babies become aware of their bowel movements. But on the average, I believe that between eighteen and twenty-one months is the right time to start. Your baby now usually gives you a warning sign when he is about to have a b.m. Some babies turn red, some make grunting noises, while others suddenly stop what they're doing and stand perfectly still for a few seconds. These signs are your key to the start of toilet training.
