Magazines for children have an ancient and honorable history. They're almost as old as children's literature itself. For the youngest, Highlights for Children is a popular and readable publication for aged 2 to 12. The magazine features articles in the sciences and social sciences written by experts, as well as stories, especially for children age 8 to 12 and for beginning readers. Games, optical illusions and puzzles have been a staple in children's magazines almost from the beginning, and these too are included in Highlights. If you want to see Highlights, chances are there's a copy at your pediatrician's or in your dentist's waiting room. Another little publication for the 6 to 8 year old set is Jack and Jill. The magazine specializes in items on health, exercise and safety, as well as fast-moving and humorous stories and the usual games, puzzles and occasional recipes. Some of the format resembles comics. An added appeal for your child is that she or he may see their letter or poem in print.
