HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED that little children love to pull off their shoes and socks whenever they can? Perhaps there are good reasons for this. Take off your shoes, take off your socks, and wriggle and wiggle your toes. Walk in the sand, walk on the grass, and feel the earth beneath your feet.

When you find that you are bringing work home from the office more frequently and perhaps neglecting the people you love; when you insist that chores be completed before you unwind and are taking the fun out of living; if you have a tendency to worry, become overwhelmed with responsibilities, or get stressed-out you might benefit from a barefoot adventure. Ask yourself: “Does work come before spending time with my children every time?” Instead of working so much, why not take off your shoes, paint your toenails red, or get a foot massage?

Kelly started taking off her shoes and clothes when she was nine months old. Her mother told me, “She refuses to wear anything scratchy or tight.” Sure makes sense to me. If your clothes are comfy, you’ll feel better, you’ll think a little less, and move a whole lot more. With your shoes off you won’t see the world in quite the same way.

Sam and Margaret have their kids take off their shoes inside the house. Margaret says, “That way I don’t have to worry and yell about mud on the floor or carpet.” Sam agrees, “The house is so much quieter when the kids run around with their shoes off.” In fact, they liked it so well, they began asking guests of all ages to do the same. This practice is becoming so commonplace that just seeing a pair of shoes by the front door will prompt guests to take off theirs first thing.

Being kind to your feet can relax you and enable you to be kinder to your children; after all, they’re the only ones you’ve got! Take off tight shoes, wiggle those toes, and breathe. Let your feet remind you that your children need your time and a relaxed, more comfortable you!
