Several of you have requested some book reading ideas for
grandparents. David Elkind wrote a few years ago, "Grandparenting:
Understanding Today's Children" (Scott Foresman), as well as two
little books that are full of short tips and fun ideas to do with
grandchildren. They are "Little Things Mean A Lot: Creating Happy
Memories with Your Grandchildren" (Crown) by Susan Newman, and "The
Grandparent`s Little Idea Book" by Teri Harrison (The Grandparent
Gift Co.). You may even want to order them from a book store for
Grandparents' Day on September 8.
I can recommend three new books on discipline. One is family
counselor James Windell's brand new book, "Children Who Say No When
You Want Them to Say Yes: How to Deal with Stubborn and Defiant
Youngsters from Toddlerhood through Teens" (Macmillan). Quite a
descriptive title, (we all know children like that) and a very practical
book.
Another good discipline book, easy to read and organized by common
topics, is "Change Your Child`s Behavior by Changing Yours: 13 New
Tricks to Get Kids to Cooperate" by Barbara Chernofsky & Diane
Gage. (Crown) I also recommend "1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline
for Children 2-12", by Thomas Phelan, (Child Management, Inc.)
Straightforward and easy to understand, this book can also be ordered by
calling 1-800-442-4453.
I suggest three super books fulled with creative thinking activities
that all parents will love! "Science As It Happens: Family
Activities with Children 4 to 8" by Jean Durgin Harlan is right on
target with easy nature and science activities that fit and challenge
these ages. (Henry Holt/Owl) In "Creative Family Projects, Games
and Activities" author Cynthia MacGregor presents simple and
inventive ways to bring family members closer together. (Crown) Cynthia
MacGregor also answers an age old question with her book "Mommy,
I`m Bored: 127 Fun-Filled and Educational Games Your Child Can Play."
(Crown) Happy Reading!
