Constipation

by Peter Weiss, M.D.

It may not be tops on your pregnancy agenda right now, and it may not get as much attention as morning sickness or even hemmerhoids but it seems that at one time or another, a pregnant woman is either going to complain about either constipation or gas. When it hits, women are concerned about how this will affect their baby. There is some truth in the saying that a woman who is pregnant will become constipated. The gastrointestinal tract moves much slower in pregnancy. Also, as the uterus grows, it may cause pressure on the bowel.

It should be noted that not all women have constipation, but for those of you who do, there are some things you can do to alleviate this problem:

  1. Eat fresh fruits, such as plums and melons.
  2. Bran flakes may help regulate your bowel.
  3. Drink plenty of water and fruit juices, such as prune juice.
  4. Mild exercise, such as walking, may also be of benefit.

If you are taking iron pills, you may be experiencing some constipation also. If you are suffering from this condition, consult your physician. He or she may be able to help with a simple remedy.
