Prenatal Testing - The Bio Physiological Profile

by Peter Weiss, M.D.

There are many tests used to evaluate fetal well being. The Non Stress Test is the most common. However, sometimes obstetricians need more information. A Bio-Physical profile is an ultrasound evaluation of the fetus. It can give us valuable information. This is usually done in conjunction with the Non Stress Test. The entire fetus and its environment are evaluated. There are four key areas that are looked at:

  1. The amount of amniotic fluid present.
  2. Does the fetus move on its own?
  3. Does the fetus exhibit good muscle tone?
  4. Is there evidence of what is known as "fetal breathing movement"? Are his or her lungs moving?

If all of the above are in good standing, and the fetal monitor is also good, then the baby is doing well. Remember -- there are many factors involved. Your physician should keep you informed about all the testing that is done. A Bio-Physical profile and the Non Stress Test are only valid at the time it is done. Things change. They may have to be repeated as often as every day. Consult your physician to see how often you need these tests done, if at all.
