Post Dates

by Peter Weiss, M.D.

Whenever an obstetrician gives a patient an expected due date, we say that it is plus or minus two weeks. A post-term pregnancy is technically those pregnancies that are 42 weeks beyond. The reason that most obstetricians begin to worry at that time is that from there on there is a markedly increased risk of poor fetal outcome. The fetus becomes at risk for fetal distress and even death after that mark.

And that is why most women, at 42 weeks, are placed into labor. Each woman is an individual and should be managed as such. She should have at least weekly Non Stress Tests and Ultrasounds in her doctor's office. She should continue to monitor the fetal movements each day on her own. If there is any perception of decreased fetal movement, you should contact your doctor immediately.
