Prenatal Care: Doctor's Visits

by Peter Weiss, M.D.

Your first prenatal visit will probably be your longest. A detailed history and physical will be done. Several blood tests should also be taken at that time. These tests should include:

  1. checking for your blood type
  2. any unusual blood disorders
  3. checking for anemia
  4. immunity to rubella
  5. prior exposure to syphilis

You may also be checked for hepatitis, or some other problem that your physician may be concerned about. A blood test to check your baby's spinal cord should be done at sixteen weeks of your pregnancy.

Later in your pregnancy, you will also be tested for any underlying diabetes, and may also be checked again for anemia.

Discuss any questions or concerns you have with your doctor. Ask him or her about amniocentesis, ultrasound, diet, etc. This is an exciting time for you and your partner and should be an uplifting and positive experience.
