One of the best ways to find out how your child is doing in school is to simply ask
her. Here are some sample questions to include:
What do you like most about school?
What do you like least?
What's the best thing you've done this year in school?
What do you think you need to improve in?
While you're talking with your child here
are some things to consider:
As you talk, do you feel her own excitement about learning? Or, do you get a feeling of
passivity or resentment toward school?
Does your child seem to be interested in learning for its own sake? Or, as a way to gain
good grades, rewards, or praise from adults?
Does she seem to have a better sense of her strengths or her weaknesses? Your child
school should be motivating her to learn and using her strengths to help her what's
difficult for her.
If you get a sense that your child is leading a life of quiet desparation at school,
then this should be a warning signal to meet with her teacher and discover ways of making
classroom time a more positive, stimulating experience.
