Helping Your Child with Math at Home

Math doesn't come easily for some kids. If your child is one of these "non-mathematical" people, don't despair. Anyone can acquire math skills and enjoy them at the same time. Here are some tips:

• Play games as a family that encourage mathematical thinking. For example, Monopoly requires mental calculation in counting money and in determining moves, while the game of Clue demands certain logical deductive skills.
• Encourage your child to think mathematically when doing practical things around the house. For example, while cooking, try doubling a recipe and ask your child to help determine the new measurements of ingredients.
• Buy your child a hand calculator. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics now recommends that every child have a calculator, so that they can quickly move beyond simple calculations and engage in more complex problem solving skills.
• Finally, use the newspaper to generate mathematical issues. For example, ask your child questions about batting averages in the sports page to learn about percentages and decimals.

  These suggestions should help your so called "non-mathematical" child move easily and pleasantly into the world of numbers.
