Your Child's Learning Style

by Thomas Armstrong, PhD

Children learn in different ways. According to one theory, there are actually seven different kinds of learning styles:

  1. Linguistic
  2. Logical-mathematical
  3. Spatial
  4. Bodily-kinesthetic
  5. Musical
  6. Interpersonal
  7. Intrapersonal

Your child could learn in any one of these ways or more likely, through a combination of several different ways.

If your child is linguistic, he loves words and enjoys reading, writing, word puzzles and story telling. A Logical-Mathematical child is more interested in concepts, and numbers as well as scientific exploration. The Spatial child learns best through pictures and images. He usually enjoys art, and mentally visualizes things quite easily. If your child is Bodily-Kinesthetic, then he needs to move and touch to learn. He loves to build things and may be an athlete. The Musical child needs rhythm and melody to learn something new. And the Interpersonal child learns best with other people around while the Intrapersonal child gets more out of being left alone to study.

You can tell which learning styles your child may possess by simply observing them doing the things they enjoy the most.
