Some Outstanding Books for the Two-Year-Old

by Peter Neumeyer, PhD

Among the very first books that I'd give to any child are those of Nancy Tafuri. Nancy Tafuri has won the highest award for illustration, the Caldecott Medal. Her board books have just the right qualities for first books - bold color and clear and simple design, nothing confusing.

Her book "My Friends" consists of just ten pages of animals with which the child can identify. In her book "My Crib", your child can find joy in the fact that all animals have their own equivalents of a crib. And in her book "In A Red House", kids can identify objects from their own room.

These are fine books for reading together as well as for teething on, thus baby can get a "taste" for literature. For slightly older children, Tafuri's "Have You Seen My Duckling?" is great fun, as you and your child can help mother duck look for her missing baby. All of Tafuri's books are masterpieces of design and highly recommended for you and your child to share the joy of reading.
