L
is for Loving
by Ken Wilson-Max
Hyperion
Books for Children
This book is a fun ABC tour of feelings and emotions.
Illustrated with bright, bold colors to offset the text, the book is
wonderful for cuddling up and reading together.
Parents told us that they liked that so many feelings were offered, not
just happy upbeat ones. This
approach let's children know that they need to understand their feelings and
emotions, whether it's an M for Miserable or L for Loving.

Simon's
Hook
by Karen Gedig Burnett
GR
Publishing
Teasing is an inevitable, painful reality of childhood.
Simon's Hook is a book designed to give children tools for coping with
those taunts and teases. We found
that children who read the book felt empowered by the suggestions that included:
Making a joke in response to a taunt, acknowledging a tease but letting it go,
ignoring the tormentor and other techniques for not letting teasing get under
their skin. Simon's Hook
demonstrated to kids that if they react to a tease they are "hooked",
but, if they utilize one of the deflection tools offered, they will be free. The illustrations work in tandem with the message to convey a
light, upbeat attitude.

Abel's
Moon

written
by Shirley Hughes
DK
Publishing, Inc.
Abel's Moon is a wonderful, sweet story about a loving
family that shares a vivid imagination. Abel,
the father, who must travel long distances and be away from his family for long
periods of time, always returns to share stories of his adventures with his
eager children. When it is time for
him to leave again, they use his work table in the yard as a means of staying
close to him. Using the table they
too learn to spin tales of adventure that they in turn share when he returns
again. This is a book that
celebrates both imagination and the deep, loving roots of family.

Fireflies
- A Winter's Tale
written by Alice Hoffman
Hyperion
Books for Children
Fireflies is a delightful tale of hope that you will love
to read to your children. Little
Jackie is the main character who is beset with a bevy of problems, not the least
of which is his tendency to be remarkably clumsy.
That clumsiness does him a good turn in the end and he becomes the
unlikely hero. The book is
beautifully illustrated and the visuals compliment the story line.
Readers empathize with the hero and feel for him with each misstep, but
at the story's end there are smiles all around.

By learning how to make good choices and how to cope with the inevitable bumps in the road, we build a stronger sense of self and in turn a more self-reliant individual. The book is well laid out and easy to read. Parents came away with tools they told us they would use as they worked towards strengthening not only their children's self image but their own as well! This book is a great resource for classroom exercises, as well as for any group that works with young teens.
